1940

June 28 The Alien Registration Act is passed in the United States.
October 29 First military draft to occur during peacetime begins in the U.S.

September 27 Tennessee Senator Tom Stewart announces expansion of Camp Peay into a military training base for United States Army.
October Construction begins on expansion of Camp. Peay.

1941

January 6 President Roosevelt recommends "Lend-Lease" program to aid Allies.

March Camp Peay officially re-named Camp Forrest.

December 7 Japan bombs Pearl Harbor.

December 8 United States declares war on Japan.

December 11 United States declares war on Germany and Italy.

1942

January Rationing program begins with tires.

Camp Forrest becomes civilian internment camp.

May Sugar rationing begins.

1943

April USDA institures a victory garden program.

July 26 Camp Forrest officially becomes a Prisoner of War camp.

1944

June 6 D-Day: The invasion of Euope begins with Allied landings at Normandy, France.

1945

January 9 General Douglas MacArthur and U.S. troops land on Philippine islands.

April 12 President Franklin D. Roosevelt dies. Harry S. Truman is sworn in as president.

May 7 Germany surrenders.

May 8 V-E Day (Victory over Europe).

August 6 & 9 U.S. aircraft bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

August 14 Japan surrenders.

September 2 V-J Day (Victory over Japan).

September Camp Forrest declared "surplus" by U.S. government.

Fall Rationing ends for most goods.

February Camp Forrest given "inactive" status.
