Artist's statement

UntitledI am a native of South Louisiana. Terrebonne Parish was my home for 15 years.

After all of these years my dreams are still filled with imagery of twisting bayous of dark water, moss-laden oaks hanging over white-washed crypts, tug boats guiding barges through the canals, shotgun houses perched on concrete blocks and — the rain.

As a young boy I saw this land as a unique landscape caught between the New World and the Old. And although I claim to be of German-Irish descent, it is the French culture which holds the greatest influence over my work.

My favorite painter since childhood has been Edgar Degas. His paintings and drawings of dancers are magical. I've always been delighted whenever I discover similarities between our lives — relatives in New Orleans, an interest in photography, and an ill-tempered disposition.

Although I create images in various mediums, I am increasingly drawn back to the camera and film. Especially now that wet darkrooms are being abandoned by most photographers and replaced by computers and printers.

My work is still created by hand, using methods devised 100 years ago.
